So I’m here, then! Blimey. One of the first things I said to Jim Tucker — the man who invited me here — was that it seemed like I’d never stop planning this trip to NZ. So to actually be driving up the side of Mt Victoria seemed very strange indeed.
Arriving in Auckland at silly-am on Wednesday, I thought it would be good form to check out some of the New Zealand press offerings. So I picked up the NZ Herald, a giant paper that was impossible to read on the plane. I remember being a little saddened at the death of the broadsheet Guardian… but boy, I’m glad we don’t have to put up with that anymore.
Two things struck me immediately about the Herald.
1. New Zealanders love New Zealand. Well that’s obvious, yes, but the attitude towards Kiwi’s doing well abroad is very heartening. There’s an almost local paper mentality when dealing with success stories. Similar ‘good news’ pieces would be scoffed at in the UK, with a firm ’so what?’ directed at reporters. But I like it.
2. Wire copy is kept to a minimum. Now I may be completely off the mark here, but in the home news sections, it does feel like there is a bit more reporting going on when compared to the UK papers. Good. Not so sure about the World sections — my guess is that it’s being syndicated, much like the world TV news here which is borrowed from the BBC, ITN and ABC — but to have so much seemingly original content is great.
Anyway — not much time to write any more just yet. The course starts properly on Tuesday, with my first solo session on Thursday. Looking forward to it.
To everyone at home: Missing you loads, and look forward to seeing you soon!
