The Linc teams up with Siren FM to provide Lincoln news podcast

September 7th, 2007

(from thelinc.co.uk)

THE LINC and Siren FM have teamed up to provide a new audio news service for Lincoln students.

From Freshers’ Week (17th September), students and local residents will be able to log on to thelinc.co.uk and download the daily morning news bulletin straight to their iPod or other MP3 player.

The bulletins will also be available on the iTunes Music Store, allowing people from all over the world to subscribe to the new service and receive bulletins automatically whenever they are produced.

The bulletins will be the first step in The Linc’s online audio project. The newspaper, which is run entirely by students, plans to publish longer shows dealing with news, sport and entertainment.

Siren FM, which is based at the University but caters for the entire Lincoln community, broadcasts locally on 107.3 FM and online at sirenonline.co.uk.

The Linc, founded in 2006, is available in news stands around the University of Lincoln. The first issue for the new academic year will be out on 16th September.

Any enquiries should be directed to davelee.mail@gmail.com.

Converging the student newsroom

September 6th, 2007

Print, radio, TV. All things we do pretty well at Lincoln. Radio especially — our student station Siren is going great guns.

What we don’t do, however, is them all at the same time. Print is represented with the several student publications around campus, some of which I’ve talked about before. I edit one of them. Radio, as I’ve mentioned already, is focused on the impressive Siren FM. And TV will, I’m told, be taking the community service route fairly soon.

There’s one arm of journalism I haven’t mentioned: Online. The three others can all be lumped into online. Print journalists writing great articles, radio students creating interesting content available for download á la BBC.

TV is easy too. I wrote an article for Press Gazette last week about the Grantham Journal using free web tools to report stories, one of which was a YouTube channel with some news reports. There’s no reason why TV journalists at Lincoln can’t do this too.

Stick it all on one simply built website and we’re on to a winner. It would be a hit, I’m sure. At the very least, it would provide Lincoln students with the best kind of training for this new media environment we’re all about to face.

I’m having a meeting with some string-pullers at our uni tomorrow. I’ll be bringing the above ideas to the table.

BBC on your iPod? Don’t bother…

September 4th, 2007

apg_ipods_070830_ms.jpgI love it when new iPods come out. Not because I can rush out to buy them, no, because it means I can finally buy the one I wanted two years ago now that it’s come down to a sensible price.

As that article suggests, it is likely that the new iPod launch with coincide with an announcement about new BBC downloadable content. I’m all for podcasts and stuff, but I have never felt the urge to watch video — of any description — on my mobile/iPod etc.

People I know that have a video iPod generally only have two or so clips on there. And, usually, these clips were uploaded on the day they got the iPod and were just trying it out. Just like the users of 3 mobile phones found out, there is not much fun to be had watching Premiership goals on a tiddly little screen. Give up already, I say.
