Hi Dave,

Three things.

One, if you can't find a hero you'll just have to become one yourself. We're in a pioneering situation here after all. You are lucky enough to be joining the profession as it goes through one of its greatest periods of change.

Two: you say you came out of journalism school hellbent on working in one part of the industry, but just two days ago you were looking for advice on setting up a basic news website and talking about using streamed images.
Perhaps you're not as compartmentalised as you think?

Three: I agree with you that building a website in Dreamweaver from scratch is not ideal for trainee journalists. But I'm aware of at least one course being designed in NZ that's focused on giving journalists web2.0 toolkits for newsgathering, multimedia storytelling and news distribution. It starts running next semester. More are sure to follow.

[...] A while ago, before the start of the current semester, I posted a blog outlining my worries and concerns over my online module. At the time I promised to put my argument to my online tutor and post the reply. [...]

Ask Mr Keeble if he pays a fee - the price of an Olympic Breakfast at the A17 roundabout, that sort of thing - and I'll come and speak to you, if it's of any interest.

[...] There’s lots of interesting discussion going on about the state of journalism education, much of it crossing the Atlantic. Read these posts from Andy Dickinson, Martin Stabe, Kevin Anderson, and Andrew Grant-Adamson in the UK, practioners and academics all. Then read this from Dave Lee, a student in the UK. In the U.S., of course, there’s Mindy McAdams’ post from last week that started this ball rolling. Then there’s Bob Stepno. And don’t miss Ryan Sholin’s young gun words of wisdom. Or Matt Waite. Or Danny Sanchez. I’d like to see some thoughts from U.S. journalism students who write blogs. I know they’re out there. Link in, folks. This is your future we’re talking about here. Lots to read there. Lots to think about. But the very fact that there are so many people talking about these issues and sharing ideas with each other increases the possibility that we’ll all benefit. It’s that “wisdom of crowds” thing again. This whole conversation illustrates something Howard Owens mentioned in his interview with me. There’s a social nature to the World Wide Web that you have to be a part of to understand. And journalists need to increase their understanding. Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]

Spot on Dave, we need be taught that the new breed of journalist is going to have to do everything. I think in a decades time we'll be looking at a very different industry, where the web, digital television and mobile technology is really at the forefront and newspapers become a reaction to the online presence.

With Pluto, my student newspaper, our online presence has been launched but it is very hard to do something and keep something going with very few resources or support.
